The Field Files

Bring me the conversation you can’t have. With your partner, your co-founder, your board, your mother. One letter at a time, answered in public with the names filed off. The archive opens with you.

THREE WAYPOINTS BELOW
I
What this is

A correspondence, not a column.

Bring me the conversation you cannot have. I answer one letter at a time, in public, with the names filed off, and I take the situation as seriously as I would take it across a table. This is not a column and it is not a comment section. It is a letterbox nailed to a tree at the edge of the property, and I am the only one who opens it. Ask the real question, not the polite version of it.

II
The terms

Five of them. All short.

Correspondence only works if the terms are boring and absolute, so here are mine. No moderator, no charge, no publishing without your yes. I remove names, places, jobs, and anything that would let a person who knows you work out that it is you, and if a letter cannot be anonymized I do not run it. Every letter gets read. Not every letter gets answered in public. If yours is going to become a File, I tell you first, and no is a complete answer.

  1. No moderator. Your letter comes to me and stops there.
  2. No charge. This is correspondence, not a funnel with a candle on it.
  3. Names filed off. Yours, theirs, the town, the company, the tell.
  4. Every letter is read. Not every letter is published, and you get the veto.
  5. This is craft, not therapy. If you need a clinician I will say so, with respect, and mean it.
III
Why it is public

Your courage becomes somebody’s map.

Here is the trade, said plainly. You write the thing you have been carrying alone, I answer it with real instruments and no performance, and then the next person who arrives here at two in the morning, lost in the exact same specific way, reads it and stops believing they are the only one. That is what the archive is for. Not traffic. Company. Your courage, filed and numbered, becomes somebody else’s map, and they will never know your name.

The letterbox

Write your letter

The thing you have not said out loud to anyone who knows the people involved. Say it here. I read everything and I answer more than you would expect.
